2008-2009 Committee Goals

Administration & Finance

FY ‘08 ‘09:

  • Assess need for increased staff to support continued growth.
  • Achieve a 5% increase in non-dues income to $117,075 (5% over the FY ’08 forecast of $111,500).
  • Grow members to 415.
  • Adopt the strategic plan by September.    
  • Evaluate the ability to add a defined benefit retirement program and short-term disability insurance for full time employees.
  • Develop a volunteer support program.  

FY ‘09 ‘10:

  • Assess need for increased staff to support continued growth.
  • Identify one or more recurring revenue sources capable of generating $4,000 or more annually. 
  • Achieve a 5% increase in non-dues income to $122,930 (5% over the FY ’09 forecast of $117,075).
  • Grow members to 432.

FY ‘10 ‘11:

  • Assess need for increased staff to support continued growth.
  • Identify one or more recurring revenue sources capable of generating $4,000 or more annually. 
  • Achieve an increase in non-dues income to $133,075 (5% over the FY ’10 forecast of $122,930 plus $4,000 from new revenue source).
  • Grow members to 450.

Business Development

Long –term (ongoing):

  • Promote new and existing business within the area served by the Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce.
  • Communicate with other organizations in the county with complementary goals.
  • Maintain the banner program and investigate expansion of the program.
  • Maintain Chamber awards program and announce recipients at Annual Chamber Dinner Meeting.
  • Work cooperatively with the Huntingdon County Partnership for Economic Progress.
  • Network with other Chambers of Commerce.
  • Pursue development of other events
  • Continue the regional Buy the Alleghenies partnership.
  • Work in partnership with JCEL, HCB&I and Boomtown on a plan for development of downtown Huntingdon and other communities. 
  • Annually sponsor a Golf Tournament in cooperation with the Huntingdon County Golf Clubs.
  • Assist with developing & transitioning businesses within Juniata College's business incubator.
  • Continue partnership on Raystown Lake Region Home & Garden Show.

Short- term:

FY ‘08’09

  • Continue development of a marketing strategy for marketing Huntingdon county businesses and services to Juniata College and Raystown Lake visitors.
  • Reach out to the Broad Top Chamber of Commerce to invite to events and work together.
  • Analyze the recently completed survey.

FY ‘09’10

  • Work with local government, HCB&I, and JCEL to secure funding for a pedestrian bridge and to promote redevelopment of the bank building and train station.          
  • Reinvestigate development of a Business Expo in partnership with HCB&I.
  • Development a plan to replace and fund the “Welcome to Huntingdon” banners.

  FY ‘10’11

  • Continue to assist in business recruitment.
  • Partner with others to develop a program to identify and attract specialty businesses & shops.

Main Street Program / Community Improvement

Goal 1: Support downtown Huntingdon as a Main Street Community, including implementation of the four Main Street principles of organization, economic restructuring, appearance, and promotion. 

Objectives:
1A       Coordinate the design and maintenance of welcome signs, way-finding signs and gateway gardens with Huntingdon Borough. 
1B        Manage a façade program in downtown Huntingdon utilizing available state and federal grant funding. 
1C        Create and maintain an inventory of downtown Huntingdon buildings for economic development purposes. 

Goal 2:  Encourage the implementation of sound land use principles through the development of attractive and sustainable communities.

Objectives:
2A       Cooperate with the Huntingdon County Planning Commission in conducting an annual Community Improvement Award Program.
2B        Develop a brochure on adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of historic buildings in cooperation with the Huntingdon County Historical Society. 
2C        Support efforts to beautify Huntingdon County through the elimination of roadside dumps, collection of bulky wastes, and municipal spring clean-up campaigns.
2D       Support the implementation of the Huntingdon County Comprehensive Plan.

Goal 3:  Support the development and maintenance of vital, safe, and attractive neighborhoods.

Objectives:
3A       Pursue Elm Street funding in cooperation with Huntingdon Borough. 
3B        Administer a sidewalk grant program in cooperation with Huntingdon Borough.
3C        Seek funding to complete the nomination of a National Register Historic District on Huntingdon Borough’s west side in cooperation with the Huntingdon County Historical Society.
3D       Seek funding to complete the nomination of a National Register Historic District in Huntingdon Borough’s Taylor Highlands in cooperation with the Huntingdon County Historical Society.
3E        Seek funding to complete the nomination of a National Register Historic District for Alexandria Borough in cooperation with the Huntingdon County Historical Society.

Goal 4:  Support the planning and development of the Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Greenway.

Objectives:
4A       Support the completion of the Smithfield- Huntingdon Pedestrian Walkway.
4B        Cooperate with the Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area in promoting Huntingdon Borough as a Greenway Hub.

4C        Support the development of a visitor center in Historic Huntingdon in cooperation with the Huntingdon County Historical Society and other partners.

Education

2008 to 2009

Short-term:

  1. Offer educational workshops from at least two of the following areas: personal development skills; group interactive skills; manager/supervisor skills; health awareness and technical skill opportunities.
  2. Continue to affect and support the YOU Leadership program.
  3. Educate members about information and resources available to help with workforce and workplace improvement efforts.
  4. Cooperate with educational institutions, both profit and nonprofit, to support educational opportunities for youth and enhance lifelong learning.
  5. Continue the BASICS (Businesses And Schools Investing in Cooperative Solutions) effort.
  6. Increase Chamber awareness to students and the public.  
  7. Enlarge committee representation by seeking new members from health care.
  8. Continue to support the LHC program.

2009 to 2011

Long-term:                  

    • Provide educational opportunities for Chamber members and the community.
    • Work with other committees and organizations on workforce development.
    • Educate members about information and resources available to help with workforce and workplace improvement efforts.

    Government Affairs

    Long-term
    Recommend positions on legislation to the Board of Directors. Advocate to local legislators Chamber/Business positions on proposed legislation. (Utilize methods to keep legislators issues in front of community-debates, info flow, etc.)Work with other organizations and legislators to advocate for, and address, area project funding needs.
    Short-term

    1. Communications Process Development:
      1. Communicate legislative initiatives (Federal, State & Local) more effectively with Chamber members. 
      2. Serve as liaison between local Chamber members and PCCE (Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce Executives) Coalition 120 and Pennsylvania Chamber of Business & Industry initiatives and advocacy to address member’s needs.
      3. Create a Virtual Advisory Committee that will provide feedback via e-mail to the Government Affairs Committee on legislation and positions.
    1. Recommend to the appropriate committee, within the Chamber, development of programs about legislation and political issues important to members.
    2. Meet with Legislators at Federal, State, County and Borough level to discuss the needs of Chamber members 
    3. Do a survey to flush out the Chamber Member’s needs 
    4. Team up with the Hospital to advocate for Health Care.
    5. Communicate thru the Daily News on Political situations.  Ex…How do you choose a Presidential Candidate?
    Juniata College or JCEL alliance for local businesses or incubation?

    Huntingdon Area Promotions and Activities

    Long-term:

    •  Work cooperatively with the Huntingdon County Visitors Bureau to educate visitors and encourage visits to Huntingdon County 's business districts.
    •  Establish programs, publications and events that will make the Historic Huntingdon business district and other business districts in the County destination locations for visitors and residents.
    •  Work closely with other committees and organizations to assist with revitalization efforts for Huntingdon.
    •  Examine ways to promote a more positive image in order to gain more participation from both within and outside of membership.
    •  Promote business participation in the full calendar of existing community and special events, and assist in strengthening existing seasonal retail promotion in Huntingdon.
    •  Develop an advertising program to promote downtown Huntingdon as a destination. Consider print, radio, billboards and local cable commercials in plan development.

    Short-term:

    •  Develop downtown directory and make suggestions for improvements and printing options.
    •  Provide business representation to address parking issues within downtown Huntingdon.
    • Open and maintain lines of communication with the business community along with providing an opportunity for any businessperson to raise issues of concern as well as opportunities.
    •  Encourage attendance and membership by personal targeting of new and existing businesses through active demonstration of value/worth through actions.
    •  Establish a sub committee to organize 2006 Holiday events and promotions.
    •  In cooperation with the Huntingdon County Visitors Bureau, develop and produce Downtown Huntingdon print publication for distribution primarily by HCVB.
    •  Develop and plan print advertisement strategy utilizing new branding targeted to reach a larger audience in addition to local advertising.
    •  Implement business Emergency Hotline.
    •  Develop plans for WaterFire 2008.
    •  Continue to expand the Mayfest event.

    Loan & Grant Committee

    Short- term:

    •  Review applications, recommend programs to the Board and Borough, and administer loan and grant programs for the betterment of the downtown.

    Membership Committee

    FY ‘08 ‘09:

    • Increase total new membership by 10% by June 30, 2009.
    • Increase the committee’s contribution to non-dues revenue by 10%.
    • Publish the membership directory online.
    • Maintain or expand the scope of the Ambassador Program.
    • Develop new ways to recognize Pacesetters and long-term members.
    • Expand the Certifichecks Program, focusing on increased purchase of Certifichecks as well as increased acceptance at area businesses.
    • Solicit increased involvement in membership recruitment.
    • Seek a Juniata College marketing intern to do a study on membership satisfaction and needs.
    • Enhance the e-newsletter as a communication tool, striving to issue an installment every two weeks beginning in the fall of 2008.

    FY ‘09 ‘10:

    • Steadily increase membership to 450 by June 30, 2010.
    • Ensure that there is one ambassador for every 25 members by June 30, 2010.
    • Increase the committee’s contribution to non-dues revenue by 10%.
    • Solicit increased involvement in membership recruitment.

    FY ‘10 ‘11:

    • Increase the committee’s contribution to non-dues revenue by 10%.
    • Develop and foster relationships with other chambers and organizations.
    • Develop sources of non-dues income.
    • Solicit increased involvement in membership recruitment.

    Technology Committee

    Long - term:

    • Promote the availability of broad-band technology and the rate of its deployment in the Huntingdon County in cooperation with the Huntingdon Area Information Partnership.
    • Support efforts to market the Huntingdon area to technology firms through the Chamber and Chamber partners.  Facilitating the sharing of technology information at the community/local user level.
    • Maintain and improve the use of www.huntingdonarea.info as a unified gateway to digital information about Huntingdon County. 
    • Maintain and improve the use of www. huntingdonchamber.com to promote the goals and activities of the Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce.
    • Market www.huntingdonchamber.com as the best place for Huntingdon area business and community information. 
    • Encourage members to use the internet to promote and /or sale products and services. 

    Short-term:         

    • Enable improved networking of Huntingdon Area organizations including RSS feeds, business site database, demographic data, and community calendar through the Huntingdon Area Information Partnership (www.huntingdonarea.info). 
    • Develop at least one program to present new technology information to Chamber Members. 
    • Develop and publish a broadband connectivity map for Huntingdon County in cooperation with the Huntingdon County Mapping Department on www.huntingdonarea.info
    • Request Chamber members’ link back to the Chamber web site. Request partners link to sections within www.huntingdonarea.info such as statistics, broadband map, and calendar.
    • Broaden membership on the technology committee. 
    • Offer members a web presence through the Chamber site and modify the website to facilitate enhanced business to business communication. 
    • Improve the Chamber web site by reviewing content to appropriately reflect the countywide nature of the organization and the accuracy and currency of the data. 
    • Modify the on-line Chamber Membership Directory to enable better searches via the Internet. 
    • Provide “how to start a business” information on the Chamber website through additional links.
